As you might have noticed, Birds and Limes are taking over the sidewalks of Austin. These electric scooters are a fun way to get around town, have the potential to cut down on traffic, and are environmentally friendly. However, before you jump on one, make sure to take the steps to stay safe and accident free!
Here are some tips on how to stay safe while scooting along!
Start slow. Before jumping on and taking off, give the electric scooter a test ride in a low traffic area and get comfortable with the scooter. Practice breaking and turning before you hit the streets!
Wear protective gear. ER's are seeing an increase in scooter related injuries that could easily be prevented by wearing protective gear like helmets, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads.
Go solo. Scooters are made for one person, trying to balance two people can cause serious accidents. Scoot along with a friend on separate scooters.
Use both hands. Leave your coffee cup behind and stash your phone in your pocket while operating an electric scooter, you'll need both hands!
Watch out. Be mindful of others while you ride, taking into account pedestrians, cars, bikes, other scooterists and intersections.
